Modification of tetrahedral amorphous carbon film by concurrent Ar ion bombardment during deposition
نویسندگان
چکیده
The surface morphology, mechanical and optical properties of tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C ) films by concurrent Ar ion bombardment during filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) deposition are investigated. The Ar ions were produced by an RF ion beam source at different ion energies ranging from 60 eV to 500 eV, in order to study the Ar ion-induced modification of ta-C films. Atomic force microscopy shows that all films are atomically smooth, with roughnesses (RMS) ranging from 0.17 to 0.43 nm. A rougher film surface has been attributed to a higher Ar ion energy. The compressive stress in the ta-C films ranges from 6.6 to 11.2 GPa and the microhardness from 34 to 67 GPa. A lower compressive stress and microhardness were observed at a higher Ar ion energy. The optical absorption spectrum shows that the edge has shifted to the lower photon energy side with the increasing Ar ion energy. The optical band gap decreases from 2.61 to 1.52 eV as the Ar ion energy is increased from 60 eV to 500 eV. The compressive stress, microhardness, optical absorption and optical band gap information suggests that the sp2-bonded carbon atoms in the sp3 matrix increase with the increasing Ar ion energy. © 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

Electron field emission properties of tetrahedral amorphous carbon films
The electron field emission of tetrahedral amorphous carbon ~ta-C! films deposited by filtered cathodic vacuum arc is reported. The ta-C films were found to have a threshold field ranging from 18 to 28 V mm, depending on the sp content. The nitrogenated ta-C ~ta-C:N! films show a lower threshold field of 12 V mm as compared to the ta-C films. The threshold field appears to be dependent on the f...

Highly tetrahedral, dense amorphous carbon ~ta-C! films have been deposited using rf sputtering of graphite by an unbalanced magnetron with intense dc Ar-ion plating at low temperatures ~,70 °C!. The ratio of the argon ion flux to neutral carbon flux F i/Fn is about 5. The film density and compressive stress are found to pass through a maximum of 2.7 g/cm and 16 GPa, respectively, at an ion pla...
متن کاملStress-induced formation of high-density amorphous carbon thin films
Amorphous carbon films with high sp content were deposited by magnetron sputtering and intense argon ion plating. Above a compressive stress of 13 GPa a strong increase of the density of the carbon films is observed. We explain the increase of density by a stress-induced phase transition of sp configured carbon to sp configured carbon. Preferential sputtering of the sp component in the carbon f...
متن کاملDynamic roughening of tetrahedral amorphous carbon.
The roughness of tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) films grown at room temperature is measured as a function of film thickness by atomic force microscopy, to extract roughness and growth exponents of alpha approximately 0.39 and beta approximately 0-0.1, respectively. This extremely small growth exponent shows that some form of surface diffusion and relaxation operates at a homologous tempera...

We report, for the first time, quadrupole mass spectrometry of neutral and positive ionic hydrocarbon species measured at the rf-biased substrate electrode of an inductively coupled plasma for acetylene rich C2H2 : Ar mixtures under various bias, frequency and pressure conditions. It has been observed that, irrespective of initial gas mixture, the resultant plasma is dominated by argon neutrals...
